Making an App a Habit

Making an app a habit involves designing a user experience that encourages frequent use and creates a sense of attachment and routine. Here are some tips to help make an app a habit:

  • Make it easy to use: Design the app to be intuitive and simple to use. The easier it is to access and use the app, the more likely users are to make it a habit.

  • Create incentives: Offer rewards, gamification elements, or other incentives to encourage users to use the app regularly.

  • Provide value: Ensure that the app provides value to the user, such as saving time, improving productivity, or providing some other benefit.

  • Make it a part of a routine: Encourage users to make the app a part of their daily routine by offering reminders or notifications at specific times.

  • Encourage social engagement: Integrate social features that encourage users to engage with each other and share their experiences, which can help make the app more memorable and enjoyable.

By incorporating these elements into your app design, you can help make it a habit for users and increase their engagement over time.

The end user of any digital product goes through a journey of choices which eventually leads to the formation of a Habit. Nir Eyal describes this journey in a simple 4-step process: Trigger, Action, Reward, and Investment and he calls this the Hooked Theory. Let's have a look at the application of this theory in pharmaceutical marketing-

  • Trigger: as the name simply suggests it is what will cause the start of the habit to use the digital product. External triggers at the appropriate time will influence the internal triggers and soon the user starts feeling a certain way every time the external trigger appears in front of him. A cancer patient will relate a lot of emails or push notifications or Social Media pages display empathetic content on symptoms. A start of a humor page to engage cancer patients in their tough journey of chemo where it does not make them feel different from other humans.

  • Action: any sort of engagement with the digital product liking, sharing, downloading, clicking, etc. will make the user land on an aesthetic, simple, and easy-to-use platform. The designer plays the most important role here in designing a certain platform that motivates and the content which is displayed for longer use of the platform. Going back to our cancer patient, if the website where the patient lands have a community forum with other cancer patients or a virtual assistant as a friend.

  • Variable Reward: Ever wondered why lotteries are such a big attraction and a business? The excitement of earning a reward that is unexpected gives a boost to form the Habit and chances are the user will visit the product more frequently. A milestone-based roadmap for a cancer patient includes milestones of chemo, regular diagnosis, etc after achieving these milestones a reward system can be in place.

  • Investment: The last phase would be to either make the user go through trigger, action, and reward or make him pay by either spending more time on the product, providing data, information, or money. A motivational webinar on the application for cancer patients will be highly engaging and the same after a few free services can be charged later.

If you are able to create a habit using this process, write to us to share it as a case study.
